A robust keyboard that won’t burn a hole in your pocket!

When you think of a gaming keyboard, you imagine something extravagant that is as pleasing to look at as it is powerful to work with. However, if you’re looking to build a gaming rig on a budget, extravagance usually takes a back seat in favor of a more performance-oriented rig. The recently released Logitech G413 TKL SE offers just that, with a clean, minimalist design and rugged construction. Currently priced at Rs 5,995, it is one of the more affordable mechanical gaming keyboards that still has a premium feel to it. We’ve been using the Logitech G413 TKL SE for a week, here’s our review.

Logitech G413 TKL SE Review: Design

Taking the G413 TKL SE out of the box, you immediately notice the clean design and robust construction. Logitech has stripped the gaming keyboard to its bare essentials, stripping away all the bells and whistles without compromising on brand and form. Inside the box, you’ll also find user documentation, a hotkey guide, and a Logitech sticker along with the mechanical keyboard.

“TKL” stands for “tenkeyless”, which means that the G413 TKL SE does not have a numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. This adds compactness to the keyboard, and users who don’t find much use for the Numpad will welcome this layout. If a numeric keypad is something you consider essential for a keyboard, you can choose other than the TKL G413 SE. There are also macro keys, a wrist rest or dedicated media keys (although the F keys double up to serve some media functions). In the upper right part are the capslock and scroll lock indicators along with the Logitech logo.

Moving on, the G413 TKL SE feels like a solid keyboard with an upper case made of low-carbon aluminum alloy. It’s a construction that inspires confidence and leaves no questions about the case’s durability. The PBT plastic keycaps are an upgrade over the standard G413 and give the keyboard a more premium feel. The keys are stable, lack significant wobble and withstand heavy use without signs of wear. You can even pull out a pair of feet on the bottom to raise the keyboard.

The keys are individually illuminated with white LED backlighting, without other color options. Logitech did not offer RGB lighting with this keyboard. The brightness can be directly controlled from the keyboard itself using the shortcut “Fn + F2 or F3”. Since the G413 TKL SE is not compatible with the Logitech G Hub app, this feature comes in handy. Unlike the G413, the G413 TKL SE keys are replaceable.

Logitech G413 TKL SE Review: Performance

In terms of performance, the Logitech G413 TKL SE does exactly what it’s supposed to do. We didn’t expect any additional features that would knock our socks off, but we did expect a satisfying experience when playing games and performing typing tasks. For those looking for an affordable gaming keyboard, the G413 TKL SE is a great place to start.

Perhaps the most important change to the G413 TKL SE is the presence of “Long Hua” switches instead of the Romer-G switches found on its predecessor. Long Hua is similar to Cherry MX switches, but does not replicate the exact performance of Romer-G. You’ll need a slightly firmer keystroke when playing games and typing. It’s something you get used to quickly, though, and given the keyboard’s low cost, it’s an understandable change. According to Logitech’s official numbers, the G413 TKL SE offers an actuation distance of 0.07 inches, with a required actuation force of 50g. The total travel distance is 0.16 inches.

We played several different games like Apex Legends, Destiny 2 and DOOM Eternal using the G413 TKL SE. You don’t need any driver or installation software to use this keyboard, it’s completely plug n play. The haptic switches worked decently, but we were impressed with the extent to which Logitech restored this keyboard’s low latency. Keystrokes registered instantly and we never felt like the keyboard was a step behind when gaming. With 6-key rollover, you can press up to 6 keys at once and the keyboard will correctly register your input. We highly recommend the G413 TKL SE to beginner gamers looking for a high-performance keyboard on a budget.

Aside from the gaming performance, the typing experience on this keyboard was also very satisfying. However, if you want to use it exclusively for non-gaming tasks, there are other, more affordable options you can go for. Unlike other Logitech keyboards, the G413 TKL SE is not compatible with G Hub software. This means that you cannot modify the buttons or access any other functions.

Statement

At Rs 5,995, the Logitech G413 TKL SE is a decent entry-level mechanical gaming keyboard. When it comes to the durability and robustness of the keyboard, there is no room for complaints. Gaming and typing performance is also quite satisfactory and you can easily use the keyboard for long gaming sessions without feeling tired. However, the lack of macro keys and G Hub compatibility limits functionality a bit.
